5.0 out of 5 stars Knows his stuff, November 19, 2009
By Mishka M "mmmatlarge" (BEIRUT Lebanon) -
This is a well-informed book rich in anecdotes by a seasoned journalist and analyst of the middle east. This collection of pieces on the Arab world is clearly-written and easy to read. What I enjoyed about the book is the author's ability to show two perspectives at once: he is neither Arab and Lebanese nor Western and American, but an interminging of both- his objectivity is tempered with a personal heritage that shows the nuances of situations that others writing about the region often lack.At the same time, issues are presented clearly, in spite of their often being complicated. By the way, pay attention to the concluding sentence of many of the pieces. They are often bemused and sometimes poingnant... an interesting read!

This must be one of the easiest books to read about one of the most intricate political subjects. For once we are able to read deep and objective analysis about the Middle East without needing to put the book down after each chapter.
It can be read with the ease of a novel. It is full of anecdotes, real life experiences, some humour and yet it is written with great seriousness and most of all clarity.
Salhani in his books and articles has a way of making us to actually enjoy reading about a frustrating subject. When you're done with this one, don't hesitate to read his previous book, Black September to Desert Storm.
